Several years back, the good folks at Tupleo Press came up with the idea for The Million-Line Poem. Poets would submit two lines—a couplet—and the world would see what a collaborative poetic effort could and would became. My two lines were from a poem I wrote long ago about The Combat Paper Project, which per Wikipedia, was “formed to help veterans cope with experiences in the war. It was based out of the Green Door Studio in Burlington, Vermont in the United States. Their processes include making paper out of their old uniforms to then create art on them as well as many other creative outlets for them to connect to fellow veterans.” My poem, “Combat Papers or the New/Old Glory,” originally appeared in The 22 Magazine, Volume 2: Sign & Symbol Issue. My couplet is below:

Sown with the stolen threads of youth, the back-break stoop
of the fallen, every cottoned row: our field of dimming stars & stripes.

The photo above was taken by Piotrus at the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum in Atlanta, Georgia in 2010.
